Jack Fruit Seed Stir fry | Palakottai Podimas | Simple and Yummy Recipes

Palakottai Podimas / Jackfruit Seed stir fry is an easy and tasty South Indian recipe and makes an excellent side dish for plain rice with sambar, rasam and curd. We call this Jack fruit seed as ' Palakottai ' in Tamil.

In South India, we add jackfruit seeds to sambar, aviyal, mix veg kootu etc.... Try making sambar with jackfruit seed along with some drumsticks, that sambar will have a different awesome to it and you will definitely fall in love with it. Whenever there is Jackfruit season, I will never miss making sambar and podimas ( stirfry ) with jackfruit seeds.
For all the stir-fries, we usually add grated coconut at the end. I have not added any coconut here, if you wish and you want more quantity, add some grated coconut at the end.

Ingredients
  • 1 Onion, medium-sized, chopped finely
  • 2 Green chillies, finely chopped
  • 1/2 inch Ginger piece, finely chopped
  • 15 nos of Jack Fruit Seeds / Palakottai
  • 1/2 tbsp Channa Dal
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • Few Curry Leaves
  • Salt as required
  • 2 tbsp Oil
Preparation :
  • Place the jack fruit seeds with 1 cup of water and a little salt in a pressure cooker. Pressure cook for 1 or 2 whistles and switch off the flame. When the steam goes down, open the lid. Drain the water, mash the seeds partially and keep aside.
  • Instead of using the pressure cooker, you can also boil the jack fruit seeds in a pan till it is done.
Method :
  • Heat oil in a pan, when hot add channa dal / Bengal gram and mustard seeds. Allow it to splutter.
  • Add onion, ginger, green chillies, curry leaves and fry till onion turns light brown in colour.
  • Add required salt and mashed jack fruit seeds. Mix well and stir-fry for a minute and remove from the stove.
  • Serve it with plain rice and sambar, rasam and curd.
You can even add grated coconut at the end, mix well and serve.

Onion Tomato Gothsu

Onion Tomato Gotsu Recipe - Thakkali Gotsu - Tomato Gothsu / Kosthu Recipe.
A simple and easy side dish or chutney recipe for idli and dosa. It can be quickly done and a very tasty side dish/chutney recipe for idli and dosa. It can be served as a side dish for chapathi and rice also.
For this recipe use only the ripe tomatoes. If you use ripe tomatoes, the tomatoes will become mushy to give a gravy-like consistency and even cooks quickly. If using ripe tomatoes,  no need to add water, as the tomatoes release lot of water.

Onion Tomato Gothsu
Cuisine: South Indian
Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Serves: 2
Ingredients :
  • 2 Onions, medium-sized, chopped
  • 3 Tomatoes, chopped ( ripe tomatoes is a must )
  • 2 Green Chillies, slit
  • 10 Garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1/2 inch Ginger, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Asafoetida / Hing
  • Few Curry Leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp Oil
Method :
  • Heat oil in a heavy-bottomed kadai/ wok. When hot, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds and allow it to splutter.
  • Add in curry leaves and asafoetida to it.
  • Then add onion, green chillies, Garlic, Ginger and saute till onions turn translucent.
  • Add tomatoes, red chilly powder, turmeric powder and salt. Saute and cook on high heat for 3 minutes.
  • Cover and cook for 10-15 mins on low heat or till it is done. (At this stage if needed add 1/4 cup of water )
  • Garnish with coriander leaves. Serve with idli and dosa.
